Summary:
(1941-Present) Well-known for his lifelong efforts as a voice for black America, civil rights activist and politician Jesse Jackson joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led by Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1965. Jackson created an independent civil rights organization called Operation PUSH (People United to Serve Humanity) in 1971, and his organizational skills and mesmerizing speaking style propelled him to the national political stage where he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. Though unsuccessful in his bids, Jackson continues to play an important political role in America. Part of the Black Americans of Achievement Video Collection that celebrates the most influential African Americans in history.
