Summary:
(1887-1940) Marcus Garvey preached black separatism. Born in Jamaica, Garvey strove to improve the status of Jamaican blacks. Traveling extensively through Latin America, Europe, Africa and America, he introduced the concept of Pan Africanism -- the idea that all black people are one people whose common home is Africa. He formed the Universal Negro Improvement and Conservation Association (UNIA) as a way to unite blacks, promote racial pride and create programs for educational and economic opportunities. Many consider Garvey to be the single most important figure in African-American history because he represented a new black consciousness. Part of the Black Americans of Achievement Video Collection that celebrates the most influential African Americans in history.

Only available in the US.
