Summary:
(1866-1955) Explorer Matthew Henson got his first taste of travel as a cabin boy on a merchant ship. When he was 18, a young explorer named Robert Peary hired him as a personal assistant. Traveling together through Greenland, the two men shared a common goal -- to find the North Pole. Though his essential role in the attainment of this goal was initially disregarded, the Explorer's Club, the Navy and the White House eventually honored Henson. His name and legacy also live on in the language and stories of the Inuit, an indigenous people of Greenland. Part of the Black Americans of Achievement Video Collection that celebrates the most influential African Americans in history.
