Summary:
(1944-Present) Author Alice Walker was a shy child, having been accidentally disfigured at a young age. Developing an extreme awareness and concern for those who suffer, Walker became very active in the Civil Rights Movement. While at Sarah Lawrence College studying literature, her own writing began to focus on the concerns and conditions of black women. She won the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Literature for her novel The Color Purple. While her more recent interests have been environmental causes and feminist concerns abroad, Walker continues to write poignant literature. Part of the Black Americans of Achievement Video Collection that celebrates the most influential African Americans in history.
