Summary:
Examine the fascinating process by which a caterpillar becomes a beautiful butterfly. Using time-lapse photography, the program details each of the four steps of butterfly development: the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly. In each stage, students will analyze such survival strategies as egg or cocoon placement, protection from predators, and food choice. Viewers will also study the process of metamorphosis and compare the caterpillar to the butterfly in order to ascertain all of the changes that occur during the chrysalis stage. The program concludes with adult butterfly courtship, mating, and fertilization, where the life cycle begins anew.
