Explore the many cultural contributions in jazz, literature, and visual arts that African Americans have made from the 18th century to the present. Students will see the many historic events that have helped shape African-American musicians, writers, artists and their forms of expression. A large portion of this program is devoted to the scope of jazz history in America. Students will learn the many elements, both musical and cultural, that combine to create the jazz sound. Key African-American writers, such as Phillis Wheatley and Frederick Douglass, are featured along with highlights and excerpts of their works. Lastly, students will learn about the Harlem Renaissance and how both the works and lives of the artists were a form of protest against racial prejudice in our society. Other African Americans featured include Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Meta Warrick Fuller, Robert Johnson, Herbie Hancock, and many more.
