How much of what students see around them today was influenced by the Renaissance? To answer that question, this program places key events in their context with an on-camera host who introduces each segment and provides a guided tour of contemporary buildings, monuments, and other landmarks that reflect our debt to that glittering time. The program begins by surveying the background of the Renaissance in Europe, from the collapse of the Roman Empire to the Crusades. After briefly treating medieval culture, it outlines the rise of humanism and events in 14th-century Italy that nurtured the revival of interest in classical learning. It then examines the 15th-century revival in art, letters, and learning that brought the Renaissance to its height in Italy and in Europe. The teacher's guide includes suggestions for student projects and activities.
