Is the drawing up of a new constitution enough to dispel 300 hundred years of colonial wars and racial conflict? The story of Vryburg High School shows that the relationship between democracy and racism in society is a lot more complicated that many South Africans assumed. In 1996 for the first time black students were allowed into the previously all-white high Vryburg High School. The white community wanted to preserve the status quo; the black students sought change--quickly. The outcome, a steady build up of conflict, resulted in open clashes between white parents and black students in early 1998. A thin White Lie explores the complexity of race and democracy through the fascinating story of one small community and their battle to become good neighbors in the new South Africa.
