The discovery of DNA's structure by James Watson and Francis Crick was one of the greatest scientific events of the 20th century. The discovery came at the dawn of the Nuclear Age, an age that was supposed to change the world forever. But DNA would have a far greater impact on the average American than even the Atomic bomb. It would lead to exciting new treatments for previously incurable diseases. Perhaps one day even a cure for cancer. It would bestow upon scientists the awesome power to create new life forms, revolutionize the way we grow our food, the way our criminal justice system determines guilt or innocence. In roughly half a century since DNA's Double Helix structure was revealed, scientists have repeatedly pushed back the frontiers of genetic understanding. Cloning a human being - once the stuff of science fiction is now a possibility. With each new breakthrough comes an awesome responsibility to use genetic science safely and responsibly. To help tell that story we have interviewed Dr. Jan Witkowsky, Director of the Banbury Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Long Island and Jeremy Rifkin, author of THE BIOTECH CENTURY.
