California has long been a hotbed of seismic activity, yet people continue to flock to "the Golden State" and build along the volatile faultlines that run through much of its most densely populated areas. Two powerful quakes in Los Angeles in 1994 and San Francisco in 1989 proved the dangers of this, but also showed the remarkable job done by those city's planners to prepare for just such a disaster. THE 20th CENTURY takes an in-depth look at both of these quakes, which left a combined 128 people dead, and compares them to recent earthquakes in Japan, Mexico and Armenia that were far more disastrous. While these quakes were all roughly the same strength as the American ones, the death toll rose into the thousands in all three. Geologists, rescue workers, city planners, government officials and reporters all offer insight into the factors that can spell the difference between a few casualties and thousands, while engineers detail the latest advances that are making buildings and other structures better able to handle the awesome forces of these natural disasters.
