Summary:
In early 1943, the British Army deployed a large raiding force into the jungles of Japanese-occupied Burma. These raiders were known as the Chindits, named after the fierce lion-like stone creatures that stood guard at every Burmese temple. The Chindits operated deep behind enemy lines, gaining their re-supplies by air. These long-range penetration operations were the inspiration of one of the most dynamic and unconventional military leaders of WWII--Brigadier Orde Wingate.
