Prediction is the siren song of earthquake studies—the alluring problem on which reputations can be won or wrecked. Not just careers, but million of lives and billions of dollars depend on the ability of scientists to say just when and where the earth will move. Follow as NOVA takes a look at the high-stakes quest to predict earthquakes.

Killer Quake!
Metropolitan Los Angeles is sitting on ground zero. Slicing under the highrises of downtown is a network of potentially deadly faults that could trigger the nation's most devastating natural disaster. NOVA takes viewers from urban trench sites to the top of the Santa Susanna Mountains, in search of clues to where nature will strike next.

The Great San Francisco Earthquake
In the early 1900s, San Francisco stood as a proud and flourishing symbol of America's recent conquest of the once-wild West. But on April 18, 1906, the city experienced an awesome reminder of the uncontrollable forces lying dormant just beneath the splendors of its cosmopolitan surface. Thirty times more powerful than the temblor that decimated northern California in 1989, this earthquake measured a ground-wrenching 8.3 on the Richter scale!

Special DVD features include printable materials for educators for Killer Quake!; access to the NOVA and American Experience Web sites; and closed captions on Killer Quake! and The Great San Francisco Earthquake.
